HISTORY OF SKATEBOARDING
Skateboarding is described as the act of rolling, or preforming triks on a skateboard, but its not just that, it is a sport and mode of transportation. It was called Sidewalk Surfing, in the 50's, back then it was just transportation and you made your own skateboard with a wooden plank and some rollerskate trucks and wheels. In the 70's called the ollie created by Alan "Ollie" Gelfand. The ollie was reinvented in 1981 by Rodney Mullen who used it for 'jumping' on flat ground instad of our of a half pipe. This allowed people to do tricks without having to be in a bowl or a half-pipe. Once ollieing was perfected people started doing it up on to objects, mostly rails, and riding on parts of the board or the trucks on the object or in skate terms grinding.
The Half-Pipe
The picture above is a picture of a half pipe, they are used in other sports than skateboarding, like snowboarding and biking but this is a site about skating so forget about that. A half-pipe is used for vert skaters. They are people who like to get high air in the pipe and do grab tricks more than flip tricks. You start out on the top of one side of the pipe, putting the tail, back side, of your board on the edge then you put your feet on it and lean forward to drop into the pipe. Now your going to go to the other side and launch into the air and remain straight so you dont hit anything off the edge of the pipe when you drop back down.
The Bowl
A bowl is just a swimming pool without water, it is concidered street skating not vert, even though it works basically just like a half-pipe. The only difference is it is cemented into the ground so you wont be as high up, and it is more like a bowl that you eat soup out of than a pipe.
Differences Between Street and Vert
Street skating and vert skating have some differences. A street skater is more of the person who likes to do tricks on flat ground instead of flying high up in the air, and can pull off combos of tricks by manualing then jumping onto a bar and grinding then donign a kickflip off of the bar, basically a combintaion of tricks but i'm sure you figured that one out yourself.

Vert skating is more of riding in a half-pipe to get big air and pulling off grab tricks with spins, the most famous of which is the Indy 900 which is grabbing the side of the board that is in front of your chest and spinning in a 900 degrees in a left or right direction.

There is no clear cut winner here with the choice of street or vert. I myself and a street skater because i live in a sucktastic town that no one has heard of there fore there is no place to skate. If you do go with a choice I would say go street because even if you want to be in a half-pipe you just need to find a bowl, it is about the same thing.

This is Zack Cook, he is the skate-rat of the town, and one of my best friends.
